You may think that valentines day in Japan is the same as in any other country but actually it is split up into two days. You may have heard of it but Japan has a white day on March 14th, one month later than valentines day.

On valentines day, Japanese females give males chocolate. It maybe for a friend, a love one, or a coworker. Of course the chocolate that you give to your loved one or someone that you have an interest in will be different from other chocolates. There are 4 different types of chocolates and in Japanese they are called, “Giri Choco”, “Gohoubi choco”, “Honmei choco”, and “Tomo choco”. (choco is short for chocolate)

The first one “Giri” literally means social obligation so usually it is the chocolate that you give your coworkers. It is usually those cheap small boxes of chocolate that cost less than 1000 yen (10 dollars). You might think that it has to be a chocolate bar but actually it can even be a chocolate cupcake like the one below.
