Here are some basic composition techniques that are used in famous paintings such as Mona Lisa. First off, why do we use it. The main purpose of taking a photo is making the subject stand out while making other parts of the photo that are not the subject less distractive. You may have heard of moody photos or bokeh. These types of photos allow one to make their subject stick out. Moody photos make the background dark so that subject stands out. Bokeh is used to blur elements that are not the subject of the photo which brings our attention towards the main subject at hand. A very clear photo that has many subjects however, will confuse the viewer to what is the main subject and it will take a lot of time to process what is being shown. Photos that have great composition however, allows us to easily process who or what is the subject so it is pleasing to the eyes thus we perceive them to be beautiful.
The below is a list of the most common composition rules that will help you make your photos better and of course, make your subject stand out more. However, these techniques are just techniques so you do not have to follow them. And just like any other rule sometimes they are meant to be broken!
