Studying Abroad in Japan? Things you need to buy and when to buy them!

Refrigerator

If you are staying in Japan for at least a year, it would be best to buy a refrigerator as soon as possible (unless your dorm provides one) so that you can make the best use of it throughout the whole year. I always cooked at my dorm to save money. Depending on how much you eat, you might be buying two plates every meal. You will also notice that the vegetables here are expensive. (Besides bean sprouts) It would be wise to browse various super markets that are near your dorm once you arrive in order to find the cheapest store. This way you save a few cents every single time you go to the super market which will add up to hundreds of dollars in the long run. From my experience, the cheapest super market is “OK store”. Unfortunately this super market is only in Kanto region in Japan so if you are in Osaka then you probably won’t find it there. Following that is Seiyu (owned by Walmart) and finally Gyomuyo super. Also almost all super markets give a discount to their bentos after a certain time. This time depends on the hours of the super market, if it is open 24 hours then it will have a later discount time. I noticed that many super markets will start giving discounts at around 8pm.
