Gacha Stores (Capsule Toys)

Odaiba Capsule Toy Shop

Japan has a plethora of capsule toy shops known to many people as gacha stores. The word gacha originates from the Japanese word “gacha gacha” and it means crank crank. It is an onomatopoeia word that comes from the noise when you turn the handle of the gacha machine.

Although many gacha machines can be found at the most famous otaku city Akihabara, you can find them in other cities like Odaiba, Shibuya and Shinjuku. At Akihabara, you can mainly find anime goods in these machines like the photo but other gacha stores will have more character goods or miniature goods like a mini phone or a mini Japanese lantern.

When you purchase a gacha, it comes out in a capsule like the orange ball in the below photo. You are allowed to take this home to protect your product should you put it in your bag. If you do not need it, you can return it to the staff or there will be a machine that you can leave it in. Occasionally if they are super ghetto then they will have a small basket where you can leave it in.
